Not crying-in-your-car wrong (though sometimes that too). Just a low, persistent buzzing of this ain’t it running beneath a life that works on paper: the job that pays, the house, the relationship you fought for, the resume you spent decades building. All present and accounted for. All reasonably good. And still, the buzz persists.

Thanks for reading Angela! A diagnosis. A layoff. A blowup big enough that leaving is no longer confusing, but is the obviously correct response. I call that the push: something bad enough happens that walking away needs no further explanation.

But there’s a second, quieter kind of transition that doesn’t wait for that kind of permission. I call it the pull: no crisis required, no smoking gun, just a persistent lean toward something that has nothing to do with what’s currently “working.” In my work with clients, it’s actually more common than the push-driven story we’re used to hearing, and it deserves to be trusted every bit as much.

What’s the difference between a push and a pull in a life transition?

A push moves you away from pain. A pull moves you toward alignment, and you can feel the difference in your body if you slow down enough to notice.

I heard it named perfectly on a recent reading with a woman thirty years into her career. “It’s a pull now,” she told me, “and not a push.” Nothing was on fire. No boss had crossed a final line. She simply found herself leaning toward creative, communal work that had nothing to do with the resume she’d built. She said it was the first time in her life she’d ever let herself lean toward something just because it lit her up.

That’s how you know. A push has a villain. A pull has a direction.

Why do we wait for a crisis before we let ourselves change?

Because over-giving, over-functioning women are taught that wanting isn’t reason enough. Culture and society reinforces that only suffering earns permission to want something different.

Show up. Perform. Keep the household, the team, the work husband (can you imagine?) and the family running. Somewhere in there, most of us absorbed the idea that walking toward something new requires walking away from something broken first, or it doesn’t count as legitimate. Anything less looks ungrateful at the least or irresponsible at the worst. Like you’re throwing away so much accomplishment for no good reason anyone else can understand.

Recognize the season you’re actually in. Not the version you explain to keep everyone else comfortable. That’s the first stage of the R.O.O.T.S. framework I work through with clients, and it’s usually the hardest one, because it asks you to stop needing a villain before you’ll believe your own buzz.

How do you know if it’s a pull, or just burnout talking?

Burnout wants relief from what’s currently happening. A pull points toward something specific that stays present even on your best, most rested day. If burnout on its own sounds like the more likely story for you right now, Maybe You’re Not Just Burned Out untangles that distinction on its own.

They can travel together, and untangling them takes honesty, not diagnosis. One client described being “sick of my job and beyond ready to pivot to a new creative and communal life.” That’s push-flavored exhaustion. Another said she’d “been there, done that for decades,” and was ready for “something part-time that brings me absolute joy and is also helping others.” That’s a pull with a shape to it: part-time, joyful, in service.

Your sha-na-na (what I call your gut, your body, the wisdom you’re designed with) usually already knows which one you’re standing in. The “logic” and overthinking is what’s arguing with it and keeping you stuck.

My own pull: leaving healthcare for a life nobody required me to want

I left thirty years in traditional healthcare without a crisis forcing my hand. A reading, a couple of years before I ever packed a box, had already started giving me language for something I couldn’t fully explain yet. Diving into the study and getting certified came later, after I’d already left. But the first real language for it, the first oh, that’s what this is, showed up while I was still standing in the old life.

I wasn’t fired. I wasn’t burned to the absolute ground, though it was closer than I let on for a while. What actually moved me was getting quiet enough, after years of holding everyone else together, to feel a persistent lean toward a different life: toward moving out of the country, toward this work, toward the woman underneath the one I’d spent decades building. Standing ten toes down in a decision nobody required me to make is a different kind of scary than leaving after a blowup. It’s also a different kind of sacred, because nobody handed me the reason. I had to trust the pull, the buzz on its own.

What do you do when you feel the pull but don’t trust it yet?

Start by naming the season honestly, out loud or on paper, before you try to plan the exit. Clarity comes from language first, strategy second.

That’s the order the R.O.O.T.S. framework follows: Recognize the season, Own what’s true underneath it, Open to what the transition is actually handing you, Tend to your body while you move through it, Step forward with support instead of alone. You don’t have to build the whole staircase before you take the first step, you just have to stop insisting you need a crisis-sized reason before you’re allowed to want something else.

FAQs: Trusting a Pull Instead of a Push

Q: How do I know if I’m being pulled toward something or just running from burnout?
A: A push tends to ease with rest, because it’s a reaction to what’s currently happening. A pull doesn’t fully resolve with rest. It points toward something specific (a person, a place, a kind of work) that stays present even on your calmest, most recovered days.

Q: Is it normal to want a big life change even when nothing is technically wrong?
A: Yes. It’s one of the most common patterns in sacred transition work. A good, workable life and a life that no longer fits aren’t mutually exclusive; plenty of women check every box they were taught mattered and still feel quietly hollowed out underneath it.

Q: Do I need a specific reason to leave a job, relationship, or identity that isn’t “bad enough”?
A: Not usually. For most of the women I work with, a genuine pull toward something else is reason enough on its own. You don’t owe anyone, including yourself, a crisis-sized justification before you’re allowed to want a different life.

Q: What is the R.O.O.T.S. framework?
A: R.O.O.T.S. (Recognize the season, Own what’s true underneath it, Open to what the transition is actually handing you, Tend to your body while you move through it, Step forward with support) is a five-stage way of moving through a life transition intentionally instead of by accident. It starts with naming the real season you’re in, not the version you explain to keep everyone else comfortable.

Q: How does Human Design relate to trusting a pull instead of a push?
A: Human Design offers language for how a person is designed to move, decide, and use their energy, which can make it easier to recognize an authentic pull as real information instead of dismissing it as boredom, wishfulness or ingratitude. I go deeper into how that shows up by design in What Your Human Design Says About How You Move Through Change.

The pull doesn’t need your permission, just your attention

A push and a pull can both be true signals. But only one of them has been treated as legitimate and earned, and it’s not the one that’s actually more common in the women I work with. If there’s a buzz underneath your very respectable, very workable life, it doesn’t need to get louder or worse before you’re allowed to pay it attention.

If you’re not sure yet whether what you’re feeling is a pull, a push, or both tangled together, that’s exactly what the free Name Your Season assessment is built for: five minutes, no crisis required. Leave with language and next steps for the season you’re actually standing in.

Life is full of transitions. You do not have to lose yourself in them.

With BIG LOVE and appreciation,

Angela

Thanks for reading Angela! (If that question feels familiar, you might already know it from the piece on burnout versus sacred transition — same in-between, looked at through a different lens this time: design instead of season.)

The truth is most likely nothing is wrong with you. You might just not be functioning the way you were actually designed to — and that’s not a flaw, that’s wiring nobody ever handed you the manual for. Human Design — the self-knowledge system Ra Uru Hu introduced in 1987 — was never built to tell you who to become. It was built to explain how you’re energetically designed to move through the world, decide, and change. Quantum Human Design™ didn’t replace that system, it built upon it. It was developed by Karen Curry Parker, one of Ra’s own students, who worked alongside him and, after he passed, expanded the language so people could move beyond their baseline expression into their most authentic one. Same foundation. A second layer of language for a different version of the exact same design.

Here’s what I want to lay out over a cup of tea: what your Type actually tells you about how you experience change, why your Type has more than one name, and why what you may see as failure and being lost is you moving along the continuum towards who you were always meant to be.

(If you don't already know your Type and Strategy, pull your free chart here before you keep reading — the rest of this will land a lot more specifically once you know which one is yours.)

Why “What Should I Do” Is the Wrong Question

Most of us were conditioned to handle periods of disruption or transition the same way: push through it, come up with a pros-and-cons list, overthink it into submission. What you didn’t learn is that your most natural and least resistant way through depends on your Type.

If you’re an Alchemist (Generator) or a Time Bender (Manifesting Generator), you have a defined sacral center — consistent, sustainable energy you can actually rely on. For some, that shows up as an instant gut-level “uh-huh” or “uh-uh” way before your mind can manufacture the bullet points list, your body already knows what you should do. For others, that same sacral truth takes a little longer to be certain or requires more information. Either way, I call it the sha-na-na — the body’s truth, not the mind’s logical reasoning. (It’s the same sha-na-na I wrote about the night the ancestors pulled up in Mexico — knowing showing up in the body before the mind had finished its Power Points.)

But if you’re an Initiator (Manifestor), an Orchestrator (Projector), or a Calibrator (Reflector), you may not have that instant gut access to your truth. Your body still knows. It just speaks through informing, invitation, or time — not necessarily an immediate yes-or-no in the gut.

Annoying? Perhaps. Sacred? Absolutely.

Strategy: The One Thing About Your Type That Doesn’t Shift

Strategy is the one aspect that’s locked to your Type. Unlike other parts of your chart, which shift based on your specific configuration, Strategy doesn’t change. If you’re a Generator, your Strategy is Wait to Respond. Every Generator, every time, no exceptions based on your mood, your circumstances or anything else in the chart.

Across the five Types, there are five Strategies: Inform before acting. Wait to respond. Wait to respond, then inform. Wait for recognition and invitation. Wait a full lunar cycle. What you get is what you got.

Here’s why that matters during a transition season specifically: most of us have been taught to handle upheaval by using whatever strategy is loudest in the culture around us — “sleeping on it,” “praying on it,” and “wait for someone to tell you it’s okay.” If that’s not your Type’s strategy, you’re adding resistance to a season that’s already hard enough. An Initiator forcing themselves to wait for permission. An Orchestrator pushing to initiate before anyone’s invited them in. A Calibrator being rushed into a decision in a week instead of a lunar cycle. None of that is you being difficult — it’s your energetic blueprint being told to have a seat while you abide by a strategy that was never yours to begin with.

What Conditioning Actually Is

When I speak of “conditioning” I’m referring to the story you learned to tell about who you are and how you’re supposed to operate. It comes from your family, your culture, your lived experience, ancestral memory and even the parts of your chart that stay open and experience the energy in the room around you. None of that makes you broken or wrong. It means you adapted to whatever environment you were raised and shaped in.

Here’s why that matters for change specifically: conditioning gets loudest exactly when your life is shifting. It’s the pressure to keep proving, keep performing, keep operating from the identity that once kept you safe. But the identity that brought you to it is not the one who will take you through it. (C’mon Somebody!) Deconditioning isn’t separate from moving through a transition. It is the transition itself.

Quantum Expression Is the Aim. You’ll go around Adam’s barn to get there.

Your Type doesn’t just describe how you’re built to move day to day — it also names two different points along the growth process you’re in the middle of right now. The words Initiator, Alchemist, Time Bender, Orchestrator, and Calibrator are not simply a rebrand of Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, and Reflector. They describe two different expressions of the exact same design — the same shadow-versus-optimal split I wrote about at the gate level in Gate 47 — The How Is Not My Business: every aspect of your chart, not just every Type, moves between a conditioned expression on one end and the most aligned expression at the other end.

Traditional Human Design’s whole job was getting you from a conditioned expression — the version of you built entirely from what the world rewarded — into baseline expression: deconditioned enough to actually operate from your Type, Strategy and Authority instead of your programming.

Keeping it 100, Quantum Expression is where we actually want to live. It’s the more aligned, more authentic version of ourselves — operating without old conditioning quietly running the show. Quantum Human Design™ named that further expression on purpose, because it’s genuinely something worth moving toward.

Here’s what the continuum and strategies look like:

Manifestor → Initiator — Strategy: Inform before acting

Generator → Alchemist — Strategy: Wait to respond

Manifesting Generator → Time Bender — Strategy: Wait to respond, then inform

Projector → Orchestrator — Strategy: Wait for recognition and invitation

Reflector → Calibrator — Strategy: Wait a full lunar cycle

The part people get wrong: reaching your quantum expression once doesn’t mean you made it and you occupy that state forever. Most of us haven’t built the capacity to stay at our most aligned frequency 100% of the time — we’re human, and our human-ness pulls us back into conditioned patterns from time to time. That’s not failure. It’s sharing this world with other humans and their energies, as they are.

What changes once you do the work of deconditioning old patterns isn’t that you stop exhibiting conditioned patterns — it’s that you stop staying in them as long as you did before. Because you’ve honed your Strategy and Authority and know how your design works best, you catch the old programming faster. There’s no whole identity crisis. You recognize it, you course-correct, and you’re back to your aligned self again, quicker than you were in the past.

This is the tension of the in-between you keep feeling. The space where the old version of you no longer fits, but the new one hasn’t made herself completely known yet. It’s the nameable, ongoing movement between Conditioned, Baseline, and Quantum Expression — real growth, measured not by never slipping again, but by how quickly you find your way back.

What This Actually Looked Like For Me

I followed my family’s plan for me. I checked all the boxes. 3 healthcare degrees, #1 in my Nurse Anesthesia class, a house, a marriage, world travel- all the things I was told would give me a good and fulfilling life. And it did, for a time. But when I outgrew the desires of the teenager and young woman that built my life for me, there was no language for that. I had never heard of Human Design. All I knew was that the discomfort I was feeling in my gut and my chest wouldn’t leave no matter how many times I was congratulated, how many times I was told I was a shining example for my people or how many times my friends expressed envy at my life. All I knew was my life didn’t fit me anymore and I was stuck between the life I had built and the one I didn’t know was unfolding.

Then a medical issue got misdiagnosed four times at 40, while still recovering from a divorce but prior to losing both parents 18 months apart. And I just sat in all of it believing my life was falling apart, not understanding what I was being initiated into or how my design was the blueprint for what I was becoming. I didn’t even have language to call it becoming.

The language came after, once I found this work — not a five-year plan, just full-bodied understanding, that how I’d moved through those seasons was part of my design. And so was what I was building on the other side. That clarity let me leave a 30 year healthcare career, move to Mexico, and start this business — all after 51. Not because a chart predicted it. Because it gave me permission to trust what my body had already known the entire time, standing ten toes down, sha-na-na and all.

FAQs: Human Design, Quantum Human Design™, and Life Transitions

Q: What’s the difference between Human Design and Quantum Human Design™ terms like Initiator or Alchemist? A: The traditional name (Manifestor, Generator, etc.) is the language for Baseline Expression — real and necessary, but not the ceiling. The Quantum Human Design™ name (Initiator, Alchemist, etc.) is the language for Quantum Expression: the more aligned, more authentic version of the same Type. Almost nobody lives there permanently — human tendencies pull us back toward conditioned patterns sometimes — but doing this work means you recover faster than before.

Q: What is Human Design Strategy, and why does it matter during a transition? A: Strategy is the one part of your chart that’s fixed by Type — Inform before acting, Wait to respond, Wait to respond then inform, Wait for recognition and invitation, or Wait a full lunar cycle. Leaning on your actual Strategy during a transition, instead of whatever approach is loudest around you, prevents unnecessary resistance and decisions made from fear or old conditioning.

Q: Can Human Design tell me when a big life change is coming? A: Not with certainty — it isn’t a prediction tool. It clarifies how you’re built to move through change once it arrives, and why some transitions feel destabilizing while others feel aligned.

Q: Why does conditioning get louder during a life transition? A: Conditioning is the story you learned about who you’re supposed to be — and a transition destabilizes exactly the foundation that story was built on. That’s why old patterns like over-proving or performing tend to resurface hardest during change, not despite it.

Q: Do I need a full reading to understand my design during a transition? A: A free chart gives you your Type and Strategy as a starting map. A full reading goes deeper into where you’re currently moving along the Conditioned–Baseline–Quantum continuum, since that shifts with your level of deconditioning rather than staying fixed once and for all.

The Point Isn’t the Chart. It’s the Permission.

Your design was never going to tell you who to become, Amiga — no chart does that. What it does is name where you’re moving right now: closer to conditioned, settled at baseline, reaching toward quantum, or somewhere between all three in the same week. You can stop measuring yourself against a ladder you’re supposed to climb once and never come down from, and start measuring progress the way it actually works: not by never slipping, but by how quickly you find your way back to your most aligned self.

Life is full of transitions. You do not have to lose yourself in them.

If this cracked something open, hit reply and tell me — where do you feel like you’re moving right now, not where you think you’re supposed to have landed? I read every single one. It can happen when you have been under too much stress, responsibility, emotional labor, caregiving demand, workplace dysfunction, or unsafe expectation for too long without enough recovery, support, or relief.

A sacred life transition is different.

A sacred transition is the season when your old way of being no longer fits, but the new way has not fully introduced herself yet.

Burnout asks:

What has been draining me for too long?

A sacred transition asks:

What version of me, my life, my roles, my pace, or my identity no longer fits?

And because apparently, life is committed to being extra, sometimes the answer is both.

You may be depleted because you have been carrying too much.

And you may also be waking up to the truth that the life, role or identity that once helped you survive is no longer sustainable for the woman you are becoming.

What Burnout Can Look Like

The World Health Organization formally defines burnout as an occupational phenomenon connected to chronic workplace stress. That matters, especially because many workplaces are still out here acting like “we treat our employees like family” while running people into the ground. Super cute slogan. Terrible nervous system support.

But in real life, many people use the word burnout to describe more than work stress.

And honestly, that tracks.

Because depletion does not always clock in and out.

You can feel burned out from:

caregiving

parenting

being the dependable one

financial pressure

unsafe or unsupportive environments

grief

holding everybody else together while silently wondering who is holding you.

Burnout can also be shaped by inequity — including racism, sexism, discrimination, unsafe workplaces, racial trauma, and the extra emotional labor many women, especially women of color, are expected to carry for societies at large.

Burnout may sound like:

“I’m exhausted all the time.”
“I don’t care like I used to.”
“I feel numb.”
“I feel resentful.”
“I can’t focus.”
“I dread things I used to handle.”
“I don’t have anything left to give.”
“I just need everyone to stop needing me for five business days.”

And burnout can show up in the body as well.

Fatigue.
Brain fog.
Sleep changes.
Tension.
Irritability.
Digestive changes.
Anxiety.
Emotional flatness.
Loss of motivation.
Feeling detached from your work, your responsibilities, or even people you love.

And let’s be clear: burnout is not a personal failure.

Burnout is often a signal that the demand has exceeded your available capacity for far too long.

That may mean that:

you need rest

you need support

your boundaries need strengthening

something in your environment needs to change

you need medical or mental health care

the system around you is asking too much while giving too little

So no, we are not going to spiritualize exhaustion and say “and this too shall pass.”

Sometimes burnout is your body saying:

This is too much. I need care. I need relief. I need help.

And we listen to that.

What a Sacred Life Transition Can Look Like

A sacred life transition is not just a hard season.

It is the in-between.

It is the tender, messy, honest space between who you have been and who you are becoming.

It may begin quietly. Nothing has officially fallen apart. Your life may still look “you’re winning” from the outside.

You may still have the job, the title, the relationship, the responsibilities, the image, the routines and the role everyone expects you to keep playing.

But inside?

Something is shifting. Something is ending. Something is asking for you to remember and reclaim it.

A sacred transition may sound like:

“I don’t recognize myself anymore.”
“I should be happy, but something feels off.”
“I’m grateful, but I can’t keep pretending everything is alright.”
“I feel like I’m outgrowing the life I created.”
“I don’t want to blow everything up, but something’s gotta give.”
“I’m tired of being praised for surviving the things that are draining me.”
“I can’t go back to who I was, but I don’t know who I’m becoming yet.”

A sacred transition can show up through:

a career pivot or vocational restlessness

a relationship shift, ending, or reckoning

a grief season or life-after-loss recalibration

hormone changes or body changes that force you to listen differently

a spiritual awakening or deeper call toward purpose

a move, reinvention, or identity shift

a season where your body, mind, and spirit start asking for something different

You may be in a sacred transition if your life still technically works, but your body no longer wants to participate in the performance.

You may keep trying to go back to normal, but normal is the thing your soul is desperately trying to get away from.

If the role that once made you feel safe now makes you feel trapped.

If your old coping strategies no longer work.

If you are questioning what success, peace, stability, love, purpose, or fulfillment mean to the current version of yourself.

If you feel like you are standing between who you were and who you are becoming.

And feel me on this… it’s not always dramatic.

You do not always need to quit your job by Friday, sell everything you own, move to another country, change your hair, and start calling yourself Phoenix Rising by Monday.

Although, listen… sometimes the hair change is necessary. It just is what it is.

But a sacred transition does ask for truth.

It asks you to stop gaslighting yourself about what is no longer working.

<div transformation.

Burnout says:

I do not have the energy to keep doing this.

A sacred transition says:

I am no longer the person who can keep doing this in the same way.

Burnout often needs recovery.
A sacred transition often needs reflection, release, and rebuilding.

Burnout asks for care.
A sacred transition asks for honesty.

Burnout may be connected to what has been demanded of you.
A sacred transition may be connected to what is emerging from within you.

Burnout may require rest, boundaries, support, or a change in environment.
A sacred transition may require grief, identity work, nervous system support, emotional processing, and a new relationship with yourself.

Burnout may be the alarm.

A sacred transition may be what the alarm is alerting you to.

Where Burnout and Sacred Transition Overlap

This is where it gets tricky.

Because both burnout and sacred transition can make you feel tired, foggy, emotional, irritable, unmotivated, and deeply over it.

Both can make you question your work, your relationships, your responsibilities, your pace, and your old goals.

Both can make you wonder:

What is wrong with me?

But the better question may be:

What is my body, my life, and my intuition trying to tell me?

Sometimes burnout is the body’s first clear signal that the old way is no longer sustainable.

Sometimes the exhaustion is not just about needing a nap.

Sometimes the exhaustion is about needing a new relationship with your life.

That does not mean rest is irrelevant. Please rest. We are big fans of naps, hydration, bloodwork when needed, therapy when needed, and not treating your body like it’s a rented mule.

But if you rest and return to the same life that keeps requiring you to abandon yourself, the depletion will most likely come back.

Because the issue is rarely just tiredness, it’s the patterns, roles, old agreements and perspectives.

The version of you who learned to survive by being needed, useful, strong, agreeable, available, productive, and low-maintenance.

Sheesh! Getting a little personal I know, but it needed to be said.

Questions to Help You Tell the Difference

If you are trying to figure out whether you are burned out, in transition, or both, start here:

1. What is actually draining me?
Is it my workload, caregiving role, relationship dynamic, emotional labor, financial pressure, health stress, family responsibility, environment, or the pace of my life?

2. What feels too tight?
Where does my life require me to shrink, perform, over-function, or disconnect from myself?

3. What would change if I had real support?
Would rest and support help me feel like myself again, or would I still know deep down that something no longer fits?

5. What truth have I been minimizing?
Where have I been saying “it’s fine” when my body, energy, or spirit knows I’m two seconds from being Angela Bassett walking away from that burning car?

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" that already knows it’s time to move on to something new.

You Do Not Need to Blow Up Your Life

A sacred transition does not always mean everything has to change immediately.

Sometimes it begins with one honest sentence:

This is not working for me anymore.

That sentence does not have to become a resignation letter, breakup text, relocation plan, or dramatic announcement by lunchtime.

It can simply become a doorway into telling the truth, getting support, rest that actually restores, strengthening your boundaries, and asking better questions.

You don’t need to blow up your life.

But you may need to stop gaslighting yourself about what isn’t working anymore.

What to Do Next

If you recognize yourself in burnout, start with care.

Look at what is draining you. Look at what support is missing. Look at what expectations need to be questioned. Look at what your body has been trying to tell you. And please, if your symptoms are persistent, intense, or affecting your ability to function, get appropriate medical or mental health support.

Over here we believe in science and soul.

We listen to the body and we make the appointments.

If you recognize yourself in sacred transition, start with truth.

Name what feels complete.
Name what feels too tight.
Name what you are grieving.
Name what you are tired of performing.
Name what your body is no longer willing to carry silently.

You don’t have to have the whole plan or know who you’re becoming.

You only need to take the next aligned step.

FAQ: Burnout vs. Life Transition

Can burnout be part of a life transition?
Yes. Burnout can be one of the first signs that a deeper transition is happening. It may show you that your current pace, role, environment, or identity is no longer sustainable.

Is every burnout season a sacred transition?
No. Sometimes burnout is burnout. It may come from chronic stress, unsafe workplaces, caregiving overload, lack of support, discrimination, grief, health issues, or unrealistic expectations. It deserves care and practical support, not spiritual bypassing.

How do I know if I need rest or a bigger life change?
Start with rest and support where you can. If you feel better after meaningful recovery, you may have been deeply depleted. If rest helps but you still feel the old life no longer fits, you may also be in transition.

What if my life looks good on paper but feels wrong in my body?
That is worth listening to. A life can look like success and still require too much self-abandonment to maintain. Gratitude and truth can sit at the same table.

Do I need to make a major decision right away?
Usually, no. Sacred transitions often need honesty before strategy. Unless you are unsafe or in immediate danger, give yourself room to listen, reflect, regulate, and get support before making big moves.

Final Thought

Maybe you are burned out.

Maybe you are in a sacred transition.

Maybe you are both depleted and becoming.

There is no shame in any of it.

You are not lazy because you are tired.
You are not dramatic because the old way stopped working.
You are not ungrateful because you want something more honest.

Sometimes exhaustion is a signal. Sometimes discontent is data.

Sometimes the life that once kept you safe becomes too small for the woman you are becoming.

Want to Know What Season You’re In?

If this felt a little close to home, your next step is not to force yourself to figure everything out in the next 24-48 hours.

Start by putting a name to the season you are in.

Take the free Name Your Season Assessment to understand where you are in your current transition, get permission to move on from where you’ve been stuck and learn what your next aligned step may be.

With BIG LOVE and appreciation,

Angela

I’m Angela, The Sacred Transitionist. It’s the way I’ve always rolled, a combination of science and gut instinct.

On my first visit there was an immediate feeling of a loving and embracing energy. Not from the people (I hadn’t met anyone yet), but from the physical location itself. It took hold in my chest and filled the expanse of my stomach as soon as I exited the airport shuttle at my temporary home.

Thanks for reading Angela! He’s also invited myself and another Black immigrant couple to his home to break bread with his family, round trip transportation free of charge.

I have many other examples of unprovoked kindness, interactions of mutual respect and outright comical conversations with people whose DNA is a part of this land- but the focus of this piece is the celebration of MY ancestry in a place thousands of miles from home.

What Had Happened Was…

There is a thriving Black community here. We come together regularly, although somewhat elusively, if you don’t know where to look.

And one thing we are going to do is celebrate us!

So I knew to expect no less for Juneteenth. A fiesta full of good food, good vibes and good people- complete with our cousins who honor and respect our safe spaces, they are most welcome at the cookout!

It’s rainy season here and evening thunderstorms are the norm. So it wasn’t completely unexpected that the lights went out, but what took place after that absolutely was.

We were, listening to jams from the 80’s and learning the latest line dances, when the power went out and there was complete darkness. Not a problem in 2026 when cell phones have lights, but after 3 brief hints that the power might come back to stay, it seemed pretty clear that the party was a wrap.

But, was it?

I’ve traveled to many Black countries and am a child of the 70s, so I’m well versed in what Black folks will do when the groove is riding high and there is a way to make a beat. Tabletops, hard shoes on wood floors, makeshift drums and hands slapping thighs become the rhythm section. Chants, moans and hums bring ancestrally familiar melodies of their own. Yet for some reason still unbeknownst to me, I didn’t think it would be a thing this far from home in a country that isn’t Black.

But what one man with a bongo can do when surrounded by the right people…divinely orchestrated magic that took us exactly where we needed to be.

Out of the shadows our cousin pulled up with his drum and brought forth the spirit of the foremothers and forefathers- ours and his.

And they took over.

Telling us to remember from our bodies, from that deep tribal space. The DNA connection that time, capitalism and technology can never break.

Feet were stomping, arms were flying, asses were shaking and faces were turned towards the sky.

When I closed my eyes…

It was the dancing scene from the movie Sinners.

It was the “The Sugar Shack” painting from Good Times.

<a celebration for those of us who have left our homes in search of a new version of freedom in a land that is not our own.

It was a celebration of finding a space where our ancestors and their descendants are welcome.

It was a celebration that we are still here.

And then, out of nowhere, a saxophone joined in and turned the whole joint up all over again.

The Human Design Of It All

The more I study Human Design, the more I look through its lens to understand myself and the world around me.

If you know your Human Design profile, pay attention to what helps you feel rooted.

For some people, home is quiet.

For some, it is freedom.

For some, it is beauty.

For some, it is purpose.

For Line 4 folks like me, home has a lot to do with relationships, consistency and stability.

I’m frequently asked why I chose this place. Understanding my design helps me to understand my process and that answer more.

This place is not perfect. Like anywhere else, it has its challenges, old electrical grids for one. But beneath the challenges what remains consistent is the energy of this land and the connection with its people. What is stable is the communities I’m a part of and how they uplift and support each other.

On first glance a lot of people won’t see this and that’s ok. That party last night may have just been a bunch of crazy people dancing in the dark. I’m a firm believer that those who are meant to see will see and those who are meant to know will know.

If you’ve read this far and are wondering why I haven’t named this magical place. I’ve been wondering myself. As I continue writing about my experiences this information will undoubtedly be forthcoming, but for now I’m feeling it’s enough to leave you open to the possibility that what we have can exist in many places in Mexico and throughout the world.

But for me, for now, Mexico is THAT GIRL!

And maybe that’s the deeper invitation here.

Maybe home is not only a place. Maybe it is a feeling your body recognizes before your mind has finished making all its computations. Maybe it is the people who make you feel safer, softer, louder, freer, and more yourself.

For me, Human Design has helped me understand why this kind of community matters so much. My Line 4 needs connection, consistency, and relational trust. It needs a place where belonging is not just a concept, but something I can feel in my sha-na-na.

And that night, in the dark, with drums, saxophone, sweat, laughter, and the ancestors all up in the room?

My body said “Bienvenido, Chica. Tu corazón encontró su hogar.” 🫶🏽

With BIG LOVE and APPRECIATION,

Angela

PS- Let me know if you’ve felt similarly about a place you visited or moved to. Like lights you up in a way that you know if you could ever pull it off, it would change your whole life!

When you imagine yourself doing this new thing, the thought alone brings peace, joy, satisfaction, success or even surprise.

Basically, it’s like your favorite ice cream on a hot, summer day that doesn’t melt too fast and stays put in the cone…sheer, unadulterated delight!

But while you’re feeling the feels of your new brainchild, your mind enters the chat and does what she does best…states the obvious- that you have no idea how to make this fabulous thing happen for yourself!

(Like, for real for real, a classic me vs. me situation.)

Then the shiny new inspiration starts losing its sparkle and takes off for the horizon faster than Road Runner when Wile E. Coyote had that Acme rocket strapped onto his back.

The fears and doubts move in to where the goodness once lived and you abandon the very thing that gave you the creative energy of life. Only to return to the status quo and wait for the stars to align and give you a spark of hope once again.

For My Part…

I’ve mostly been a “I can figure it out,” or “if someone else did it, I can do it,” kind of girl. But if I’m keeping it a buck, there was a period of about 30 years where I repeated this cycle around something I wanted since graduating college- moving abroad.

I had actually partially pulled it off for a few years. I had a place and a business in Jamaica and was back and forth to the U.S. But I had convinced myself that I couldn’t fully make the leap because of family obligations, property, career, relationships and all the other tethers that make it seem impossible to get up and go.

I let my dream of a simpler, commute-less life close to a warm ocean, eating foods off the tree and spending most of the day outside the house in nature and with real people- slowly and painfully wither until it was on life support. All because I didn’t believe I could figure out how to make it work for me.

I’ve since figured it out, brought my dream back from the brink and left the country…a story for another day.

Human Design In Daily Life

This part of my story and yours if you felt any of this in your sha-na-na, is the gate 47 at work.

Gate 47 is fittingly located in your Ajna Center (Third Eye Chakra) which is known as the Divine Translator. As in, translating your divine inspiration into possible ways of bringing it to life. It goes by a few names,

the gate of Realization (Traditional Human Design)

Hexagram of Oppression/Exhaustion (I Ching)

the gate of Mindset (Quantum Human Design)

The optimal or quantum expression of this gate is to remain hopeful and inspired regardless of what’s happening in your internal or external environment. Not in a toxically positive way that doesn’t acknowledge what you’re experiencing or allow you to experience your whole range of emotions, but in a way that allows you to stay in relationship with the inspiration and not get stuck in the negative thoughts that all of us deal with everyday. About 70-80% of our thoughts just for context.

The flip side of gate 47, the conditioned or shadow expression, is to let go of an idea or inspiration because you don’t know how to make it real. Hence, the phrase on the painting and the title of this article, “The How Is Not My Business.”

To live out the optimal expression of the gate 47 requires faith.

Faith in yourself, in the abundance of life, and that the next right step will appear at the right time.

It also requires the surrender of the notion that everything is for you to figure out. This can be an especially hard thing for those of us who have been conditioned to spend our lives doing exactly that.

How you experience the gate 47 in your life may depend on a few things, such as:

whether you have it defined or undefined in your chart,

the transits of the planets,

who you’re around and how they express it,

where you are located, and

your level of conditioning.

There are other factors that may add flavor to how you experience the gate 47, but starting with this list will give you good insight.

Bringing It Back To You

The invitation of Gate 47 is to cultivate a mindset that is to remain open to possibility and potential.

If you feel Gate 47 is active in your life right now, whether it’s defined in your chart or you’re feeling it through the energy of others around you, here’s some things to keep in mind:

You do not have to know the whole plan to hold space for the inspiration.

You do not have to have the complete, perfect strategy before you take the next right step.

And you definitely do not have to let your mind talk you out of something your spirit has been quietly carrying for years.

Sometimes the dream is not asking you to figure it all out.

Sometimes it is simply asking you to hold it long enough for the next piece of the puzzle to reveal itself.

The how may not be your business.

But your hope?

Your trust?

Your willingness to stay open to the possibilities?

Those parts most certainly are.

With BIG LOVE and APPRECIATION,

Angela

To see if gate 47 is defined in your Human Design, DOWNLOAD YOUR FREE CHART HERE

Want to understand how inspiration, doubt, pressure, and timing show up in your own Human Design? CLICK HERE for more info on Sacred Design Readings.

That is the kind of work I love helping women in between versions of themselves explore.

I’m Angela, The Sacred Transitionist.
